KRFL: FA Draft Starts Wednesday, June 2
by: rfick - Monday 24 May 2010 - 20:39:43
With the rookie draft behind us we now have the FA draft to tackle. New game and contract files have been posted on both this web site and the yahoo group. Please check them over carefully ASAP and send appropriate fixes to Jerry (game file) and Jason (spreadsheet). Please CC me a copy as well so I stay informed.

As stated previously, the draft will start on Wednesday, June 2. The time slots will be the same as we had with the rookie draft (initially, some rounds we draft twice in a day). The protocol is basically the same but there are a few minor differences. The biggest one involves the "tender" process. This is also a matter that usually invovles quite a few questions. I will post a thread in the draft forum detailing the process and then people can ask their questions there. That way, others can see the responses. Hopefully, this will help clarify things better then back and forth emails. You are certainly welcome to send me an email as well with your questions.

Please understand that due to the tenders, the time in which each round is closed will be adhered to more closely. Also, if you own the first pick, you must allow people the chance to tender their players prior to the start of the round. So, no starting your picks the night before, or even before the scheduled 9 AM EST time slot.

For the benefit of the new owners here is a brief description of how the FA draft works. We begin with the first round, which is a $10M round (the only $10M round). When it comes to your turn to select, you can select any player available in the FA pool. That player will join your team at the cost of $10M for the current year. Next year, you will then decide whether to sign them to a contract or cut them. The DK in-game salaries are meaningless to our league. Each player's salary is determined by when they are drafted (that includes players that are successfully tendered as well. Their old salaries are meaningless). The second and third rounds are $7.5M rounds, followed be three $5M rounds, etc. At $2M we go to five rounds at each pay level, then unlimited $100K rounds.

If you are wondering about how much a player might go for, I suggest you look at past season's FA drafts (which can be downloaded off the web site). It will change from year to year based on the money and talent available, as well as how aggresively owners draft. It really can be a very strategic process, which for me makes it one of the most enjoyable aspect of this league (well, except for how long it goes on).

You need to watch your cap, and keep in mind the roster requirements which have been mentioned a number of times previously. At the conclusion of the draft, you must have 52 players on your roster. Trading will resume after the conclusion of the FA draft up until a week prior to the start of the season. 2010 rookies may be traded at this time, but not during the season. Also, trades need to have a 1-1 ratio so that all teams maintain 52 players.

One of the trickiest things for Jason and I to do is monitor the spending of each team. As an owner, you can't spend to within $1M of your cap if you still need to fill 12 more spots on your roster, as that would cost a minimum of $1.2M. If any of you are following the draft closely and see a team in a position where they must pass a few rounds, please notify us. We will both be looking but a mistake here can cause big problems if we have to go back and negate a pick.

Please ask if you have any questions. Also, if you have a time conflict, a good resolution is to talk to the person drafting after you and see if you can send them a list. They then post yours and then theirs. If you can't work anything out, you can send me a list. This can become quite troublesome for me, however, if I start receiving a number of them.

I should have the first rounds up in the next few days but again, the one-round days will have the same time slots (un-traded) as before.

Ralph
